Zapoznając się z realiami życia w dziewiętnastowiecznym Londynie opisanymi przez Karola Dickensa w „Opowieści wigilijnej”, uczniowie i uczennice poznają również współczesny wymiar zjawiska ubóstwa. Dzięki dyskusji o przejawach oraz przyczynach biedy, młodzież za pomocą metody burzy pomysłów samodzielnie wskazują możliwości ograniczania tego problemu poprzez działania międzynarodowe oraz indywidualne. Lektura jest przyczynkiem do dyskusji o byciu świadomym konsumentem i o tym, jak nasze wybory wpływają na innych ludzi na świecie.
